5 Ways to Use Hydrosols (And What They Actually Are)

If you’ve browsed our shop, you’ve seen the word “hydrosol” attached to bottles of Rose and Yarrow mist. But what exactly is a hydrosol — and why should it earn a spot in your daily ritual?

What Is a Hydrosol?

A hydrosol is the fragrant water left behind after steam-distilling fresh plant material — flowers, leaves, or herbs. As steam passes through the plant, it releases both essential oil and the plant’s water-soluble compounds. The oil and water separate naturally, and what remains is a gentle, aromatic water infused with the plant’s subtle essence. Unlike essential oils, hydrosols are mild enough to use directly on skin without dilution.

They carry a soft version of the plant’s scent and therapeutic properties — which makes them incredibly versatile for everyday self-care. Sometimes called “flower water” or “plant water,” hydrosols have been used for centuries in skincare, aromatherapy, and ritual practice. They’re the gentler, more approachable cousin of essential oils.

5 Ways to Use Hydrosols

1. Facial Mist

Spritz onto clean skin morning or night to hydrate, tone, and refresh. Rose hydrosol is prized for its calming, balancing effect on the skin — perfect layered under moisturizer or used as a midday pick-me-up.

2. Meditation & Grounding Ritual

Mist the air around you before meditation or breathwork to help settle the mind. Yarrow hydrosol, in particular, is traditionally associated with protection and grounding — a lovely addition to any centering practice.

3. Linen & Pillow Spray

A few spritzes on pillowcases or linens brings a soft botanical scent to your space without synthetic fragrance. It’s a simple way to bring a moment of calm into your evening wind-down.

4. Post-Sun Skin Cooling

Keep a bottle in the fridge and mist onto skin after sun exposure for a cooling, soothing effect. The chilled mist feels especially good on the face, shoulders, and neck.

5. Energetic Space Refreshing

Many people use hydrosols the way they’d use a smoke cleansing ritual — misting around themselves or a room to clear stagnant energy and reset the atmosphere. Yarrow is especially popular for this, often used before entering crowded spaces or after energy work.

A Few Care Tips Since our hydrosols contain no alcohol, preservatives, or synthetic fragrance, they’re best refrigerated after opening and used within 6–12 months for maximum freshness. Store away from direct sunlight, and always patch-test if you have sensitive skin.
